Confidentiality of Tutoring Sessions

The Writing Center believes that a collaborative relationship between instructors, tutors, and tutees is extremely vital to writing improvement.

We do, however, respect the confidentiality of every tutorial session, and unless otherwise noted, will not share this information.

Plagiarism

A difficult issue for any writing center remains plagiarism. Our writing interns typically assume that writing brought to them during a session or shared over our OWL is the tutee’s own work. If concerns do arise with research citations, tutors will point out these concerns and explain the importance of correct citations.

Tutors will not report suspected plagiarism to anyone outside of the Write Place. However, if a tutor believes that a paper is clearly not the work of the tutee present for tutoring, and the tutee refuses any reworking of the potentially plagiarized parts of any assignments, that tutor may cancel the session at his or her sole discretion.

As part of the honor code at Chagrin Falls, plagiarism is defined as “the representation of the words or ideas of another as one’s own in any academic exercise.”

As such:

“Academic integrity can be compromised when these values [plagiarism] are not understood and applied consistently.  Academic dishonesty is strictly prohibited and personal accountability for these actions will be upheld as outlined in the Academic Integrity Policy.” (Rule 1: Academic Integrity)
